That included a single-day record of 101 deaths from COVID-19 — deaths reported to state officials last Wednesday, and included in Friday’s update from the Department of Health.
Averaged over the past week, the test positivity rate is continuing on a downward trend. It’s now at 10.2 percent — a significant drop from earlier in the month, though still well above the 5 percent threshold that state officials have said is cause for concern.
Authorities announced just after 11 a.m. that a 21-year-old male suspect had been arrested after an hours-long standoff.
According to police, an officer responded to a report of fireworks or shots fired just after 2 a.m. Sunday and was ambushed by the suspect. The suspect fired multiple rounds, striking the officer in the chest and hitting the squad car.
The 30-year-old police officer was treated and released. Two other men, ages 38 and 52, were wounded by gunfire and transported first to Mayo Clinic Health System in Albert Lea. The 52-year-old man was transferred to Rochester. Authorities said both men’s injuries were not life-threatening.
The wounded man was reported to be in stable condition at Regions Hospital early Sunday. The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension is investigating.
According to police, officers were looking for a man in connection with a domestic assault and vehicle crash at about 8 p.m. near the intersection of Rice Street and Maryland Avenue.
The $7.9 million budget amendment written by Council President Lisa Bender, and council members Phillipe Cunningham and Steve Fletcher, would redirect some non-emergency calls to other departments, fund a non-police 911 mental health crisis response program, and expand the existing Violence Prevention Program.
The proposal comes in the wake of widespread calls for police reform following the killing of George Floyd, and as the city also is seeing a significant spike in gun violence.
