Good morning Voornaam, Quick links: Alphamin released results for the three months to March and they tell a story of a major recovery vs. December's infrastructure challenges. At Coronation, be careful of the tax implications of the odd-lot offer and specific offer. Get these updates more in Ghost Bites, brought to you by Fedgroup. There's a brand new Ghost Wrap podcast that brings you a useful overview of four recent examples of M&A on the local market. I covered MultiChoice / Canal+, Grindrod Shipping / Taylor Maritime, MC Mining / Goldway and the recent Sanlam deals related to Shriram in India. Brought to you by Mazars, you can get your fix in this fast-paced podcast. With a new episode out later this week, don't miss out on the Magic Markets podcast and the latest on Accenture and FactSet. These offshore companies have had recent pressure on their share prices. If you thought the spiders were the most frightening things in Australia, think again. Give yourself the best watercooler story in the office today by reading this excellent article>>> Jeremy Maggs is a highly familiar name in local broadcasting and he hosts Investec's No Ordinary Wednesday podcast. The latest episode features award-winning fund managers Barry Shamley and Peter Vogel, bringing you their view on the markets. This podcast is brought to you by Investec and you can (and should) listen to it here>>> Digital assets and fintech: two important growth areas in the world. These terms can be confusing though, especially when you start talking about blockchain and even cryptocurrency. For a perspective on how corporates are thinking about this stuff (rather than the kid down the road on Reddit trading coins with outrageous names), I spoke to Wiehann Olivier and Mia Pieterse of Mazars in South Africa. Listen to the show here>>> Artificial, or Artificial Intelligence? AI is dominating headlines everywhere, which means opportunities and risks. To discuss this phenomenon, Nico Katzke of Satrix joined me on the latest Ghost Stories podcast. Find it here>>> |

Local company news:
Ghost Bites is brought to you by Fedgroup. Yesterday wasn't exactly the busiest day of news, but there are two things worth paying attention to. The first is the release of quarterly numbers by tin miner Alphamin, which caught up on delayed sales at exactly the right time. A combination of higher sales and a 7% increase in the tin price did wonders for the financial results vs. the preceding quarter that was impacted by damage to infrastructure. Over at Coronation, the structuring of the odd-lot offer and specific offer requires you to pay attention to the tax implications, especally if you hold the shares in your personal name. Get the details in Ghost Bites at this link>>> |

Macroeconomic Update US CPI and Fed FOMC minutes are the focus points today, with the markets looking for more clues as to when the Fed will act on rates. The rand continues to be the star emerging markets performer (yes, really), breaking below the R18.50 mark and testing R18.40 yesterday. Gold is hovering just below yesterday's new record high, with recent data showing increased purchasing of gold by central banks around the globe - especially in China. PGMs also had another good day, with palladium up a massive 4.8%. Base metal prices are also in the green this morning. Finally, oil closed below the $90 level. Key indicators: USD/ZAR R18.45; US 10-year 4.36%; Gold $2,356; Platinum ZAR R18,082; Brent Crude $89.46 This macroeconomic update is based on TreasuryONE's morning update. |

International company news: In perhaps the most American story ever, Costco (which is known for great prices in a warehouse style format ala Makro locally) is selling gold bars. Lots of gold bars, in fact. To make us feel even more poor with our rands, one-ounce bars (worth over $2,400) are flying off the shelves. Want to feel even worse? Sales are limited to five bars per customer. This is the same place that is famous for having zero inflation in its hot dogs. Incredible. And in other news, Boeing's deliveries in the first quarter fell to the lowest number since mid-2021. Quarterly results are due on April 24th. They will probably be horrible. We cover global giants and interesting smaller opportunities in detail in Magic Markets Premium. As an example of the variety, our most recent report is on energy utility Emera. You can get our entire research library for just R99/month. It pays to know what's going on out there - literally. |
