Warm weather activities are rolling out |
Happy May! Yesterday, Mackinac Island welcomed its first cruise ship of the season and it was one of the largest. Cedar Point will kick off its 2024 season on Saturday with the grand opening of a new coaster. Top Thrill 2, the revamped ride formerly known as Top Thrill Dragster, is the “world’s tallest and fastest triple-launch strata coaster,” according to park officials. Those looking forward to riding the new roller coaster may want to take a look at the newly released guidelines that all riders must adhere to in order to experience the revamped coaster. |

Delayed trains in Michigan: Nearly 50% of riders arrived late at worst station |
Tardy: Of the more than 365,000 passengers who took an Amtrak train through Michigan, nearly 34% arrived later than their scheduled time, according to national Amtrak data. The average delay was 52 minutes. The highest rate of late arrivals out of Michigan’s 22 train stations belonged to the Ann Arbor station, which sits on the Wolverine route that runs between Chicago and Pontiac. Of the station’s nearly 67,800 riders, 47% arrived late last year, with an average tardiness of 44 minutes. More in transportation: In the not-too-distant future, automatic emergency braking will have to come standard on all new passenger vehicles in the United States, a requirement that the government says will save hundreds of lives and prevent thousands of injuries every year. An update: The Michigan Unemployment Insurance Agency has agreed to a $55 million settlement after it demanded benefits back from workers during the COVID-19 pandemic. |

Michigan’s weather this week will be very nice if you want spring |
Break out the shorts: It’s going to be a very May-like week coming up with mostly warm temperatures and only one shot of rain for most of us. The high chance of showers and thunderstorms comes Friday. Generally every location in Lower Michigan will be warmer each day to Friday. Speaking of the season: Signs of spring are currently all around us — and above us, if you know where to look. Here's how to find the ancient ‘Spring Triangle’ in May’s night sky. Preparing: Jackson-based Consumers Energy will be installing iron utility poles in parts of Michigan to help withstand increasingly severe storms, which have caused disruptive outages across the state. |

Timothy’s tragic story: Teen murdered by mom exposes troubling holes in child welfare system |
On the last day of his life, Timothy Ferguson sat in an ice bath for hours as a form of punishment. His mother dragged his near lifeless body across the dirty floor into a makeshift room, better described as a closet. The space was barely big enough to fit a crib mattress in. His mother showed little compassion for human life as she put her son into the closet for the night. He never moved again. He weighed 69 pounds. Timothy's life ended on July 6, 2022. Torture and abuse by the hands of his mother provided an awful end to a difficult 15 years of life. Timothy’s tragic death is difficult to comprehend. Questions still remain despite two family members being convicted in his death. MLive/Muskegon Chronicle spent months sifting through thousands of documents, police reports and social services records that show holes in the child welfare system and failures of his parents. |

SEC, Big Ten developing plan to share revenue with players |
Never been done before: Athletes could soon be getting paid directly from their schools under a new developing plan that could provide the latest sweeping change to the college sports landscape. The latest: Former Michigan State football coach Mel Tucker’s wife has filed for divorce and is accusing him of diverting $1.5 million from their joint account for legal fees, according to court filings. Listen up: The Detroit Lions are earning widespread praise for their 2024 NFL draft class, and MLive’s Dungeon of Doom podcast is back to offer their thoughts after living at team headquarters for the last week. |

Michigan’s famous loon is still a bachelor this spring |
Alone once again: Spring is a time of hookups and breakups for the common loons that return to breed at Michigan’s Seney National Wildlife Refuge, and this season already has seen its fair share of stories. The latest update from refuge researchers is that ABJ, the world’s oldest documented common loon, was recently ousted along with his partner, Daisy, from the pool they’d settled on this spring. May the food be with you: You don’t have to travel to a galaxy far, far away to see some of the biggest scum in the universe. You’ll find bounty hunters, smugglers and others at Michigan’s “Star Wars” inspired Mos Eisley Cantina, which is about to open for business. Get ready: Summer is almost here, which means Sonic Lunch and its free weekly concerts will soon be coming to downtown Ann Arbor. |
