A cautionary tale about cyber security. |
Last week, my partner was the target of a scammer from across the globe. They were able to get into his Amazon profile, social media pages, personal emails, and a few other accounts. Overall they ended up buying $90 worth of Roblox gift cards. It’s getting refunded, passwords have been changed, credit cards are cancelled and overall everything is okay but it was scary. These strangers now have our address and have shaken up our feeling of online security.
I bring this story to you as a sign of caution and with some safety information. Here’s our most recent on scammers impersonating police. Plus, Apple users are advised to update their devices to better protect themselves. There’s student loan forgiveness scams and cryptocurrency scams on the rise. Lastly, here's 5 tips to avoid online banking fraud.

1 in 4 Millennials say they’re “forever renters,” giving up on homeownership |
By the numbers: In 2018, the share of Millennials who said they would “always rent” and not own a home was 13.3%. That number has grown significantly in a short amount of time. In 2022, nearly 25% of Millennials planned to always rent and not buy a home. Reasonings: The top reason for renting continues to be financial. This year, 77% of Millennials surveyed said they couldn’t afford to buy a home. Other reasons were they: enjoy the flexibility, prefer to avoid home maintenance/other added costs, and believe home buying is risky.
Own a home? If you are looking to add resale value to your home, start with the carpet in your bathroom. |

Michigan Supreme Court Chief Justice Bridget Mary McCormack to leaving court. |
The Michigan Supreme Court’s chief justice, Bridget Mary McCormack, announced she planned to step down from the court by the end of the year. McCormack is less than two years into her second term on the court, having won reelection in 2020. What now? Departing before the end of the year means Whitmer will be able to appoint a successor, regardless of whether the Governor wins reelection in November.
More in politics: Millions in Pro-Whitmer spending has given Michigan Democrats the advertising edge this fall. |

See where 3rd grade reading scores are highest, lowest in Michigan |
A growing percentage: Nearly 34% of Michigan third-grade students aren’t proficient in English language arts, according to 2021-22 Michigan Student Test of Educational Progress (M-STEP) testing. Six years ago, just 24% of Michigan third graders weren’t proficient on the test.
Potentially held back: Third grade reading scores are important because of Michigan’s new Read By Grade Three law, which says third-graders with an M-STEP reading score below 1252 – more than a grade level behind – are eligible to be held back. Nearly 6% of Michigan third-graders scored below a 1252 on the most recent test and are eligible to be retained, per Michigan State University. Also in education:The University of Michigan remains the third best public university in the United States in the latest U.S. News & World Report rankings. The next highest is Michigan State University at No. 77, followed by Michigan Technological University at No. 151 and the University of Detroit Mercy at No. 202. |

Long-range forecast out 2 weeks showing lots of red temperature maps |
Warmer than your average September: Both the six to 10 day and eight to 14 day temperature forecasts put Michigan solidly in a warmer-than-normal pattern. The six to 10 day forecast even shows a very high chance of warmer-than-normal weather.
For the 45-day forecast: You can expect many afternoons warming to between 75 degrees and 83 degrees over Lower Michigan through late October. On the cooler days look for afternoon high temperatures in the high-60s. National: As a country, we just scorched through the third warmest meteorological summer on record. We also had a few spots with floods that ranked as 1,000-year floods. |
