 When the largest-ever Michigan marijuana recall was issued on Nov. 17, Matt Imig’s phone began ringing. Customers were calling. Imig, who owns M&M Agriculture, a comparably small, 1,000-plant licensed marijuana grow facility in Lansing, uses Viridis Laboratories, the target of the recall, for all of his mandated safety testing. Consequently, every ounce of the 42 pounds of marijuana he’s sold to three retail customers, worth roughly $75,000 retail, is on hold. It must now either be destroyed or retested. Who will pay for additional testing and product loss is still being sorted out. “A lot of us in this are just mom-and-pop shops,” said Imig. “I have my life savings invested in this and trying to make it. This week's state report on outbreaks highlights that surge. According to data from the state health department, outbreaks of the virus are up 45% from last week. Combined with 726 ongoing outbreaks from previous weekly reports, the health department was aware of 962 total active outbreaks throughout the state as of Monday. Gretchen Whitmer has directed state agencies to accelerate and coordinate plans to remove lead pipes from local drinking water utility systems as the state readies for an influx of federal infrastructure dollars. On Monday, Nov. 22, Whitmer directed the departments of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy; Treasury; and Technology, Management, and Budget, to “assess strategies to control the cost of replacing lead service lines without sacrificing capacity” and send her and the Legislature a report with recommendations “as soon as possible.” The directive precedes an expected $10 billion for Michigan in federal Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act funding. But in the case of Nick, Mackinac Island’s celebrity bird-chasing dog who worked at Mission Point Resort, his family encompassed not only all the staff who loved him, but the thousands of guests each year who greeted him during their stays at the resort. The tri-colored border collie was 9 when he died earlier this month. He had been working with the resort’s grounds team and as a four-legged ambassador for Mission Point for the last six years.
