Pygmy hippos, puppies and bears, oh my!

It's shaping up to be a wild week in Michigan's animal kingdom. Residents of Traverse City's Central Neighborhood gathered outside of a Fifth Street home to watch wildlife experts tranquilize a 350-pound black bear that was found relaxing in a tree on Sunday. They fired tranquilizer darts into its butt, then it slept on a thick limb before falling onto a mattress below.

John Ball Zoo’s new sitatunga, a swamp-dwelling antelope, has died after he was attacked by the Grand Rapids zoo’s pygmy hippo, Jahari. The habitat was set to house two pygmy hippos, two European white storks and Chopper the sitatunga for the zoo's new hippo exhibit.

Sample beer and pet some pups at an annual Jackson County Animal Shelter event. The shelter is having its annual Bark & Brew from 1 to 5 p.m. Saturday, May 20, at the Jackson County Fairgrounds/Keeley Park.

3 Michigan homebuyers share stories as single women outpace men in market

Moving in: Women have been second only to married couples in the home-buying market since 1981, and now single women have continually outpaced single men in homeownership. These Michigan women share what motivated them to get into the real estate game.

A turning tide: In 1981, 73% of homebuyers were married couples, 11% were single women, and 10% were single men. The share of single women has continued to grow over the years, according to the National Association of Realtors annual demographic report. Homebuying demographics stand at 61% married couples, 17% single women, and 9% single men, according to 2022 data.

Michigan and Canada plan ‘abundant’ EV charging across bi-national corridor

Electric trailblazers: Michigan and Canada are establishing the first bi-national electric vehicle corridor that stretches from Kalamazoo to Quebec City and offers charging options at least every 50 miles along the way.

The corridor consists of 860 miles of highway between the two countries, officials announced Tuesday afternoon. The route represents one of the busiest passenger and freight corridors between the U.S. and Canada, according to Canadian Transport Minister Omar Alghabra.

Students from 60 Michigan schools put their engineering skills to the test at Kettering University’s Mobility Research Center in a competition to build the best autonomous vehicles.

Detroit Pistons fall to No. 5 in NBA Draft Lottery; Spurs win rights to select Wembanyama

The Detroit Pistons got no lottery luck Tuesday.In fact, they suffered the worst possible outcome – falling to No. 5. Despite finishing with the worst record in the NBA at 17-65, the Pistons had only a 14 percent chance of landing the top pick. They had a 47.9 percent chance of selecting fifth.

Changing the game: The new age of NFL broadcasting has arrived.

The NFL announced Monday that Peacock will become the home of the first-ever exclusive live streamed NFL playoff game when it presents a Wild Card matchup in 2024.
