Michigan borrowers roll ‘with the punches’ hoping for student debt relief |
Issues surfaced: A student loan forgiveness plan announced by President Joe Biden in August brought relief for Michiganders who carry federal student debt. But recent legal challenges put the program in limbo.
Stuck waiting: This means almost 1.4 million Michiganders eligible for the program – including 849,300 Pell Grant recipients who qualify for up to $20,000 – are waiting to see debt relief. The Federal Student Aid website now says “student loan debt relief is blocked.” The program stopped accepting applications less than a month after the window opened Oct. 17.

Democratic trifecta brings LGBTQ rights, gun reform to Whitmer’s second-term agenda |
As Gov. Gretchen Whitmer heads into a second term backed by a Democratic legislative majority, she’s expanding her focus to encompass long-term goals such as LGBTQ protections and gun safety reforms, she told MLive in an interview Thursday.
Despite top of the ticket woes for the Michigan Republican Party, the power of an endorsement by former President Donald Trump at the state level may still be alive and well after every candidate who sported one won their respective legislative race earlier this month. House Speaker Jason Wentworth said it was not the fault of Trump that Republicans underperformed in Michigan but the campaigns that candidates ran during the 2022 midterm cycle.
