5 things to know about Michigan as a climate haven |
With protection from the Great Lakes, Michigan will be spared from some of the worst effects of climate change, including extreme drought, intensifying hurricanes and wildfires. Here are five things to know about what that means for Michiganders already here and the new neighbors they should expect to arrive. They already coming: Amiel Handelsman and Julie Endress said they loved their life and community in Oregon, but after experiencing wildfires too close to home, they decided to take a look at where else they could live and ended up settling in Michigan. They say it's perfect with nature everywhere. Not completely immune:With much of the continent’s fresh water and without the massive wildfires of the west or the hurricanes of the coasts, Michigan is ideally situated to evade the worst of climate change. But temperatures will rise, and part of Michigan could become as hot as a Georgia summer by 2100. |

135 people have been shot, killed by Michigan police since 2015 |
The data: Police have shot and killed 135 people in Michigan since 2015 – including 19 so far in 2022 – according to a report from the Washington Post. The Post has a database tracking fatal police shootings nationwide. It’s tracked 8,015 in the U.S. since 2015 and 1,084 so far this year. More details: Fatal shootings by police are slightly less common in Michigan than the national average. Michigan accounts for about 3% of the nation’s population, but only about 1.7% of the nation’s fatal police shootings in the past eight years. Whitmer kidnap plot: The defendants in the kidnap plot apologized and expressed regret while Gretchen Whitmer denounced political extremism during the sentencing. |

Are Michiganders getting sicker or just out of practice? |
What's going on: Cold and flu season looked a lot different in recent years as Michiganders took extra precaution in the midst of a global pandemic. The result was significantly fewer reports of respiratory infections. By limiting the spread of coronavirus, communities seemingly had a stranglehold on other viruses as well. Sickness spreading: In December 2022, many of those defense mechanisms are no longer in play, and health systems are seeing waves of sick people. Schools have closed because staff members are ill. Even the Detroit Lions got hit; sick players missed practice before Sunday's game. Numbers increasing: Health systems are reporting significant increases in flu patients, including those who need to be hospitalized. Michigan’s flu surge is early and could already be outpacing pre-COVID seasons.

Lions use stunning 51-yard TD pass to keep playoff hopes alive |
Let's go! The Detroit Lions claimed a stunning 20-17 win against the New York Jets. After losing a league-worst six times in their first seven games, the Lions (7-7) are back to level after winning six of their last seven.
Increasing playoff odds: The win in Week 15 pushed them back to .500 and its first three-game road winning streak since 2017. They’ve now pulled into a tie with Seattle (7-7) for the eighth seed, just one spot behind the Giants (7-5-1) in the NFC playoff field.
