566,000 Michiganders approved for student debt relief before plan was blocked |
The numbers: About 864,000 Michiganders applied or were deemed automatically eligible for student loan forgiveness before courts halted the plan last year, new data from the White House shows. And 566,000 of those borrowers were approved for federal debt forgiveness.
But legal challenges mean it could be months before borrowers see relief – if at all. The U.S. Supreme Court is scheduled to hear oral arguments next month for two lawsuits targeting the student debt forgiveness program. If allowed to move forward, the U.S. Department of Education would forgive $10,000 per eligible student borrower and $20,000 per Pell Grant recipient.
Speaking of students: The AGBU Alex & Marie Manoogian school in Southfield has seen more than 100 Ukrainian student refugees enter its classrooms since Russia invaded the country almost a year ago. |

National parks along Lake Superior to be first to fully decarbonize |
Completely off fossil fuels: The five national parks along the Lake Superior shoreline will completely decarbonize buildings and vehicles within four years, a challenging goal meant to match the urgent need for climate action. More in environmental: Michigan and two other U.S. states are protecting climate haven habitats for plants and wildlife at a faster rate than the rest of the nation, according to new research from Michigan State University scientists. At Boyne Mountain: A fleet of MoonBikes are now available at Boyne Mountain Resort, making it the first ski resort in the Midwest to offer rides on the fully electric snowbikes. |

Life is still upside down: Michigan seniors talk about being displaced from condemned building |
In a flash on July 25, 2022, dozens of senior residents in Adrian’s Riverview Terrace Apartments were forced to evacuate. Foundation cracks large enough to fit a hand through made the building unsafe. After this rapid evacuation, dozens of residents bounced in between hotels throughout Lenawee and Monroe counties before landing on an abandoned Travelodge motel the city of Adrian purchased in August. For months leading into this winter, the residents have dealt with bug and flea infestations, lack of immediate access to medical care as well as healthy food.
What now? With no timeline to return to Riverview Terrace in sight, residents say they struggle daily while trying to fight the feeling that officials “just don’t care” anymore since a half year has passed. |

| MSU basketball players surprise shelter, visit puppies named after them |
Check this out: A Michigan humane society recently announced that a litter of 10 puppies had all been named in honor of Michigan State University basketball players. Later that day, four of the puppies’ namesakes showed up for a visit and posed for photos with the adorable furballs. MSU football: Four Michigan State football players charged with misdemeanor assault for their roles in a postgame tunnel incident at Michigan are in line to have the charges dropped. Also in sports:Iron Mountain female wrestler, Shayna Hruska, made Michigan high school history when she became the first female to win a UP state championship when she won the 106-pound title. She was voted the tournament’s Most Valuable Player by her peers. |

| Believe it or not, the top-rated Detroit-style pizza in the US isn’t in Michigan |
Well, this is awkward: Michigan has no shortage of highly-rated Detroit-style pizza places, but the highest-rated one isn’t actually located in either of the Lower or Upper Peninsulas. It’s actually in Mount Pleasant, SC. More for our foodies: A new Irish pub set to open on Mackinac Island this spring is still a few months away from pouring its first pints, but the buzz is already beginning to build.
