 Black and brown students in Michigan are far less likely to have a teacher who looks like them compared to their white peers. The state’s civil rights and education departments set a goal to increase diversity among public school teachers to more closely match the ethnic makeup of students. Michigan State Superintendent Michael Rice said local districts are being encouraged to use federal pandemic relief funds to recruit and retain teachers from different racial backgrounds. Encouraging diversity in teacher hiring was among a set of recommendations the Michigan Civil Rights Commission released last year after a year-long investigation into disparities in K-12 education. Research shows students of color perform better in class and show more interest in college if they have teachers of the same race. They are not doing well, and the conversation is turning to whether they will need intubation, mechanical ventilation or other interventions, Detroit obstetrician and gynecologist Dr. Gregory Goyert said. “Invariably, that patient will look at us and say, ‘I wish I had gotten the vaccine.’ And the only thing you can say to them is, ‘So do we, so do we,’” said Goyert, division head of maternal fetal medicine at Henry Ford Health System. Debbie Dingell, D-Dearborn, introduced new legislation Tuesday to bolster Title IX language and hold universities accountable for mishandling sexual misconduct investigations. Dingell, who joined with U.S. Rep. Jahana Hayes of Connecticut to bring the bill forward on Sept. 28, said sex abuse scandals at Michigan State University with Dr. Larry Nassar and the University of Michigan with late Dr. Robert Anderson and rape cases at Eastern Michigan University moved her to write the bill.  There’s a new No. 1 school for high school athletes in Michigan, according to Niche.com. East Grand Rapids has owned the top spot the past two years, but this season it was supplanted by Saline. Niche, a research website, publishes annual rankings for colleges, schools, neighborhoods and communities. It also categorizes its rankings for high schools, handing out grades for everything from sports to diversity to food. The website uses a variety of sources to determine its grades and rankings, drawing statistics from the U.S. Department of Ed, the National Center for Education Statistics, the Civil Rights Data Collection and survey results from parents and athletes. SEE THE LIST  Most people are impressed when someone hits their 100th birthday. But, 106? Wow! That's quite a milestone. Virginia Bett just marked her 106th birthday with a big celebration, surrounded by family and friends. Bett, who lives at Waltonwood Cherry Hill Senior Living in Canton, turned 106 on Friday, Sept. 24. She was born and raised in Des Moines, Iowa, but has lived a lot of her long life in the “Mitten State.” Bett says she never smoked and loves a glass of good wine with dinner. Her advice for living a long life: “We’re never too old to have new experiences.
