In today's newsletter, inflation says gas prices aren't actually at a record high, a look at Michigan's weekend weather and the 200th vehicle crosses the Mackinac Bridge. |
Across Michigan, Juneteenth celebrations are planned this weekend. |
Sunday, the 19th, is Juneteenth. The federal holiday (which will be observed Monday) marks the day emancipation was announced to enslaved people in Texas. They were the last to get the news of freedom. They weren't informed until two and a half years after President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation. This weekend, communities across Michigan will commemorate the day with festivals, parades, marches and more. We have a list for you here.
Sunday is also Father's Day. Cheers to the fathers, dads, stepfathers, bonus dads — to fatherhood in all its forms.

Michigan's weekend weather will offer some cooler temps before we heat up again next week. |
Not cold, just cooler: We got a taste of some serious summer heat this week. Those of you who thought it was too hot midweek will be happy to see a slight cool down for the weekend. And we don't mean it will be cold, of course, it just won't be in the 90s. One chance of rain: We could see some thunderstorms passing through on Sunday, so keep that in mind while planning your Juneteenth or Father's Day gatherings. According to Mark Torregrossa, they shouldn't stay for long, and some areas might avoid rain all together. See the entire weekend forecast here.
When it does heat back up next week: The U.S. Department of Energy suggests setting your thermostat at 78 degrees in the summer.

A family heading to Pictured Rocks drives the 200 millionth vehicle across the Mackinac Bridge. |
200 million crossings: The Mighty Mac surpassed a milestone this week as the 200 millionth car crossed the 5-mile bridge that connects Michigan's two peninsulas. Who was driving? The Dalman family from Tawas City crossed the Mackinac Bridge at 6:18 p.m. on Wednesday. Kurt Dalman was driving, with passengers Anna Dalman, and their children, Seth and Teresa. They received a gift basket and a framed photo of the bridge, which first opened to traffic in 1957.
The Dalman family isn't alone: The family crossed while on their way to Pictured Rocks. The national lakeshore near Munising has been inundated with record visitors in recent years. |

Michigan Republicans aim to limit emergency orders to 28 days in massive bill package. |
A 28-day rule:Removing emergency powers, or needing said powers to be evaluated by the Legislature after a 28-day duration, has long been a fixation of Republicans following the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. What's in the bill package? The 31-bill package would similarly alter the DHHS’ emergency order powers by curtailing other parts of Michigan law so that its oversight of a crisis could not continue past 28 days without legislative approval, including the department’s ability to prohibit public gatherings. Other state agencies would be impacted as well. We have a look at the package here.
While we are talking about the legislature: A group of Michigan lawmakers want the attorney general to investigate debunked election fraud claims from the movie "2000 mules." |
