A federal abortion ban could undo Michigan’s constitutional measure. How realistic is that? |
The odds: If former President Donald Trump wins Michigan, Democrats say all the abortion protections put in place since the 2022 election would be undone. But the likelihood of that happening is far from clear. In a new letter from an attorney hired by Ottawa County, several serious complaints are leveled against Ottawa County Administrator John Gibbs. The complaints made by county employees and commissioners include Gibbs allegedly claiming without any substantiation that a county official was cheating on their spouse, sweeping his office monthly for surveillance devices, sabotaging the work of the board, threatening to kill the county attorney and criticizing commissioners’ faith. "A tremendous loss": Eric Mays, 1st Ward councilman, a political lightening rod who represented some of the city’s poorest people, has died at 65, leaving a legacy of fearless advocacy, in-your-face politics, and a common touch that rang true with voters who elected him three times to represent their interests in Flint City Hall. |

Marijuana battle in Michigan U.P. border town remains messy |
Since December, things had seemingly stabilized in a years-long marijuana turf war in the lakefront border town of Menominee in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. But recent developments reveal the conflict is far from over. What's happening: Allegations of unethical politics and lawsuits surround efforts by eight marijuana companies to operate in the 8,300-resident town on the Wisconsin border. The marijuana retailers hope to capitalize on lucrative sales to out-of-state pot pilgrims, mostly from Wisconsin where marijuana remains illegal. More in marijuana: Michigan State Police say they busted a “large-scale illicit market” marijuana grow operation in metro Detroit, seizing 4,000 marijuana plants and processed weed worth $6.3M last week. |

Adding it up: All Michigan cities are running well behind normal for total snowfall so far this winter. Here’s a look at how far down the snowfall tally is for this season. Extreme warm spell tweaks: We wrote in the past few days about a very warm Tuesday and Wednesday of next week with a brief two-day cold spell next Friday and Saturday. Now it looks like the cold air has sped up a day, but also is pushed out a day quicker. Garden Talk: With extremely warm air in early March, should we be starting our indoor veggies? |

Michigan State gymnastics wins second straight Big Ten championship |
Back-to-back: The No. 8 Spartans (12-3) finished with a score of 197.275 to beat No. 14 Ohio State, No. 15 Minnesota, No. 23 Nebraska and Rutgers on Friday night in a Big Five Meet at Penn State. They closed the season 9-0 in the Big Ten and are the first team to win consecutive conference titles since Michigan claimed three straight from 2018-20. In hockey: The No. 4 Spartans capitalized on the power play and used a three-goal second period to secure a 5-2 win against Ohio State on Saturday night at Munn Ice Arena. That allowed them to keep a slim lead in the Big Ten standings heading into the final series of regular season. In high school sports: The MHSAA wrestling team state finals were held over the weekend, here is our photo gallery and the results from Division 1, Division 2, Division 3 and Division 4. |

Couple charged with torture allegedly fed kids dog food, oatmeal with hot sauce |
In Kent County: A Wyoming couple is accused of forcing their adopted children to eat dog food, run for miles as punishment and sleep on the garage floor, Wyoming police said in court records. An update: The trial for James Crumbley, the father of Oxford High shooter Ethan Crumbley, scheduled to begin March 5, will remain in Oakland County. Oakland County Circuit Judge Cheryl Matthews issued an order denying the father’s request for a change of venue. Also in crime: Two brothers, including the founder and co-owner of Diesel Freak in Gaylord, were fined Friday, Feb. 23, for their roles in a scheme to alter emissions controls on heavy-duty diesel engines. |
