Bad day of basketball for Spartans and Wolverines as Big Ten road problems continue
 
College basketball was not kind to the state of Michigan yesterday. The Wolverines lost while away at Minnesota and Michigan State got crushed by Purdue on the Boilermakers' home turf. In fact, the Spartans were defeated in a fashion they haven't seen since 2017. They ended the game down by 29 points in what Tom Izzo called an embarrassing "butt kicking." He pointed to plenty of mistakes that led to what he labeled "probably the worst beating I've taken as a coach." MORE

Michigan State, U-M on list of 20 biggest freshman classes in U.S.

While they didn't put up big numbers in basketball yesterday, both Michigan State and U-M are seeing big numbers in enrollment. The two schools both appeared on the list of U.S. colleges with the largest freshman enrollment for fall 2018, according to data released by LendEDU. When looking at number of applicants, U-M came out on top in the Big Ten with 64,917 applicants for the 2018-19 school year. MORE

Claressa Shields makes history as fastest boxer to win belts in 3 classes

Flint's champ has done it again! Olympic gold-medalist Claressa Shields can add another very impressive accomplishment to her resume. The boxer won in a unanimous decision Friday night over Croatia's Ivana Habazin to take the 154-pound championship belt. It puts Shields in a league of her own, as the fastest boxer ever to win belts in three weight classes. Congrats, Claressa.  MORE

The Tawas Point Lighthouse on Lake Huron is taking applications for those interested in filling the role of volunteer light-keeper this year.
