The Lions selected Michigan edge rusher Aidan Hutchinson with the second overall pick in the NFL draft last night, the club’s most significant investment in a defensive lineman in more than a decade. Pre-exposure prophylaxis, when taken as prescribed, can reduce the chances of contracting HIV through sex by up to 99%. Ensuring equitable access to the preventative medication, typically taken by daily pill, and other HIV services could bring an end to the epidemic, experts said and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports. But some public health officials and HIV prevention authorities say there are too few doctor’s offices or care centers who provide PrEP, and some who could benefit the most are not getting it.
Michigan lawmakers have proposed a nearly $20 billion budget for the state’s School Aid Fund, which includes a $9,000 per-pupil allowance for Michigan schools and $514 million for teacher retention and recruitment programs for the 2022-23 fiscal year. The House School Aid budget proposal was approved along party lines in the Republican-controlled House Appropriations Committee Wednesday. Gary Franklin wore his University of Michigan class ring every day since he graduated in 2012. But when it slipped off his finger while recently snorkeling in Mexico, he thought it was gone forever. Franklin, of Southgate, was swimming out to a snorkeling site in Playa del Carmen in mid-April when the ring fell off his hand. Although he suspected he could have made the dive to retrieve it, he said he didn’t want to alarm anyone by taking off his life jacket. Days passed. Then the text messages started. Patrick Lyoya, who died in a police shooting earlier this month, was among an estimated 8,000 Congolese refugees living in the Grand Rapids area, the largest such cluster of refugees in Michigan, according to local refugee resettlement agencies. Now, leaders in the African immigrant community say they are hoping to build a stronger relationship with police, and see better training implemented, to avoid a similar tragedy in the future.
