Lake St. Clair latest Michigan waterway found contaminated with PFAS
The PFAS environmental crisis facing Michigan is not going away. In fact, the more testing that is conducted, the more it is revealed how widespread an issue we face in protecting and cleaning our waterways. The latest PFAS bombshell uncovered by Michigan Journalist of the Year Garret Ellison involves yet another airfield connected with contaminated runoff. From Ellison: "Test results show contamination has been pouring out of Selfridge Air National Guard Base into the Clinton River and Lake St. Clair. The base, like hundreds of others, used aqueous film forming foam, or AFFF, to train with and fight fires." Kudos if you connected the dots: AFFFs are chock full of PFAS. MORE

Nassar victims gather in Washington, D.C.; Engler testifies during Senate hearing

At least 80 victims of ex-Michigan State University doctor Larry Nassar gathered in Washington, D.C. for a news conference before the start of a U.S. Senate subcommittee meeting related to protecting others from Nassar-related tragedies. MSU interim president John Engler, who has come under fire by Nassar victims for his handling of the aftermath, was one of the featured individuals to testify during the hearing. Senators grilled him for some of the remarks he's made about survivors. However, he steadfastly promoted his work leading MSU through a difficult time. MORE

Stellar objects to light up night sky this week

The Thunder Moon rolls across our night skies this week. Native Americans gave the July full moon its name. (It also is known as the Buck Moon.) The moon will reach its peak fullness Thursday. But baring excessive cloud cover, it will be quite luminous most of the week. While you're basking in the light of the moon, look up in the night sky toward the southeast about an hour after sunset. Mars is closer to Earth that it has been in 15 years. It is big. It is bright. And, of course, it is red. (Not that we needed an excuse to enjoy a stellar summer show, but... cool.)

Linebacker returns to MSU a year removed from leaving program

One year ago, John Reschke was a football player without a team. The former honorable mention All-Big Ten linebacker left Michigan State after the 2016 season. The decision to go was part of the fallout for a racially insensitive text he sent about a former teammate. ACL surgery in May last year prevented him from latching on with another program in the fall for a sixth year of college eligibility. Now he's back in East Lansing, where coach Mark Dantonio wants Reschke to be able to "finish what he started." MORE
