America mourns the death of civil rights icon John Lewis When John Lewis died of cancer Friday night at the age of 80, America felt it. The representative - whose bloody beating by Alabama state troopers in 1965 helped galvanize opposition to racial segregation - had a long and celebrated career in Congress. There was an outpouring of affection for Lewis over the weekend. But the words of Rep. Debbie Dingell, who along with her husband was a close friend of Lewis’, articulate his spirit best. “John Lewis was America’s friend,” she wrote. “He had the courage of a lion, the passion of a cougar, the wisdom of Solomon, and the heart of a lamb.” In the cyclical nature of life, Lewis saw the recent Black Lives Matters protests across the country as a continuation of his life’s work. But enforcement will be especially difficult with police and sheriffs feeling unable or unwilling to do so. “Basically, what it comes down to is I think people are adults and they can make educated decisions, " Ionia County Sheriff Charlie Noll said. “We’re not the mask police ... and I think we need to be realistic and keep in mind that we are (close to) infringing on people’s rights. As of Friday, the Michigan High School Athletic Association is proceeding toward a fall sports season with a few contingencies in place. The council has contingency plans in place if fall sports practices or competitions need to be delayed and have discussed the steps necessary to potentially move higher-risk fall sports to later in the school year. If all fall sports are suspended, they will be rescheduled during a reconfigured calendar that would see winter sports begin in November, followed by the conclusion of fall and spring seasons potentially extending into July 2021.
