Old Glory reduced to ashes during dignified Flag Day retirement ceremony
The American flag means so much to so many. It is a symbol of what our country stands for - life and liberty. It is a beacon of hope. It is a reason to fight on. Our flag is treated with respect for these and countless other reasons. And when it is time to retire Old Glory, there is a proper way to do so. Great Lakes National Cemetery in Holly hosted its second annual Flag Retirement Ceremony on Thursday. More than 5,000 worn flags were retired during the Flag Day event, burned in a fire pit built by Boy Scouts.

Social studies standards would eliminate climate change, scale back KKK
 
If newly proposed social studies standards take effect, mention of climate change, Roe v. Wade and the Ku Klux Klan either will be eliminated or greatly reduced in Michigan public schools. A group of conservatives, led by gubernatorial candidate Patrick Colbeck, R-Canton Township,  spearheaded the push for the changes. Colbeck defended the proposals as an attempt to remove political bias from school curriculum. Part of that effort included replacing the term "core democratic values" with "core values." It took the state four years to develop these proposed changes. The public has until June 30 to comment on them.

Miss Michigan 2017 spent 'dream' year championing arts in education
 
A new Miss Michigan will be crowned this weekend on the Frauenthal Center stage in downtown Muskegon. That means Heather Kendrick's reign is about to come to a close. The 2017 winner recently reflected on the past year wearing the crown and representing Michigan across the country. The big reveal? She loved every minute of it. Good for her, and we wish her well as she passes the crown to the next standard bearer. MORE
