Political polarization is driving wedges between family and friends, putting people in opposing camps with shrinking common ground. It starts with our leaders: a perverse set of incentives are pushing politicians to make mountains of molehills and promote conflict over compromise. Michigan lawmakers advance $2.5 billion tax cut plan Michigan lawmakers advanced a proposal for slashing taxes Tuesday, approving a $2.5 billion plan to cut the state income tax rate to 3.9%, expand tax breaks for seniors and put funding toward paying down pension debt. The Republican-led legislation would bring the state income tax from 4.25% to 3.9%, offer a $20,000-per-person income tax exemption for seniors 62 and older and drop $1.5 billion in one-time funding into paying down pension debt for local governments, road commissions and the Michigan State Police. The conferenced announced its postseason honors on Tuesday, one day before the league tournament starts. Michigan finished the regular season 22-5 and 13-4 in the Big Ten, coming up just short of the program’s first-ever Big Ten title. The Wolverines will be the 3 seed in Indianapolis this week. Cases in Michigan have fallen dramatically, to the lowest levels since August, before the worst of the long delta variant surge. The percentage of positive tests and the total number of tests also have decreased. The federal government, however, is now mailing rapid self antigen tests to any American who requests them. The state has distributed tests to schools, long-term care facilities and vulnerable parts of the state. People wonder, can the case counts be trusted?
