Amtrak expansion proposals bring funding to Michigan |
More transit: Michigan is receiving grant funding up to $500,000 to plan for the development of new and improved rail corridors to expand Amtrak train service, including across the border into Ontario, Canada. From a state Supreme Court hearing on potentially raising the minimum wage to the effort out of Ottawa County select a slew of individuals for vacant governmental seats, here’s your guide to Michigan politics. Campus climate concerns soar at University of Michigan since Israel-Hamas conflict |
Tension: Since the Israel-Hamas conflict broke out on Oct. 7, 2023, there have been 159 reports of campus climate concerns to University of Michigan's Campus Climate Support staff, nearly doubling last year’s total in a two-month period. What's that?: Campus climate concerns are actions that discriminate, stereotype, exclude, harasses or harm anyone in the community based on their identity. The numbers point to growing tension on the Ann Arbor campus over the conflict, university spokesman Rick Fitzgerald said. Best in class: Washtenaw Community College has been ranked the best community college in Michigan according to a pair of new rankings by Niche.com and Intelligent.com. |

‘Gorgeously green’ meteors predicted during major meteor shower this week |
Stargazing: The Geminids meteor shower, considered the strongest and most reliable meteor shower of the year, will be reaching its peak on the overnight between Thursday, Dec. 13 and Friday, Dec. 14. Iconic: Are you a fan of NASA's Astronomy Photo of the Day? You can thank Michigan Tech professor Robert Nemiroff and his colleague Jerry Bonnell for its creation. For 28 years, the pair have helped lead an international hit by sharing marvels of the universe. Down on Earth: Almost all of the lower half of central Michigan and the western side of the Upper Peninsula have warmed by an average of 5 degrees over the past 10 years, according to the latest plant hardiness data recently released by the United States Department of Agriculture. |

What’s being said nationally after Lions lose second straight divisional game |
Word on the street: The Detroit Lions (9-4) lost their second straight game inside the NFC North, falling 28-13 to the Chicago Bears in Week 14 action from Soldier Field. Here's a rundown of headlines from around the country and MLive after Sunday's loss. Ouch: The Detroit Pistons suffered their worst loss of the season after being defeated 123-91 by the Orlando Magic on Friday night. Their losing streak is the longest in the NBA since Houston lost 20 straight in 2020-21. Another loss: Michigan State fell at Nebraska, 77-70, on Sunday afternoon at Pinnacle Bank Arena for the team’s second straight loss in its first true road game of the season. |
