Remembering 'Summer of Big Sid' 40 years after search for escaped circus python
How's this for a headline worthy of The National Enquirer? Hungry Circus Python Escapes, Terrorizes Michigan Town. It sounds silly. But 40 years ago, the search for an escaped circus python in a Grand Rapids suburb was national news. Big Sid was a 20-foot, 140-pound reptile who slithered out of his crate and was on the lam for 31 days in the summer of 1978. The story of this daring escape, drawn-out search and thrilling capture is a wonderful trip down memory lane for those of us old enough to remember. It doubles as a quaint look at what made headlines during a slow summer news cycle just a few short decades ago. We can't help but wonder if anyone still has their $1.99 "Home of Big Sid" T-shirt. MORE

Granted, a good server at a busy restaurant can make a decent living. However, a couple slow shifts in a row could prove to be a financial strain. MORE

Lions training camp preview: Running game gets total overhaul

The Detroit Lions open training camp next week, and we can't wait. Heck, with the other big four Detroit sports teams stuck somewhere between mediocrity and rebuilding, the Lions (gasp!) might be our best chance to cheer on a winner for years to come. The best shot of that happening might be with an improved running game. Fittingly, Lions beat writer Kyle Meinke returns from his vacation just in time to kick off our training camp preview series with a look at the all-important running back corps. There might be a reason for some real optimism with this group for the first time in years. MORE
