Biden’s Michigan visit comes as top Democrats question reelection chances |
Campaign trail: President Joe Biden will visit Detroit on Friday, July 12, with his reelection campaign in a much different state than the last time he rallied support there. Questions about his ability to serve a second term largely surfaced following a televised debate against Donald Trump last month, when Biden’s performance worried supporters and energized the hopes of his Republican opponent. Book release: Set to release Tuesday amid the frenzy over President Joe Biden’s recent debate performance, Gov. Gretchen Whitmer's “True Gretch” memoir won’t do much to dispel questions about her national ambitions. But in a pre-launch interview with The Associated Press, Whitmer did what she could to shut down such speculation, saying bluntly that she would not step into the election if Biden were to step down. With bipartisan support, state lawmakers are finally moving ahead with opening themselves and the governor’s office to public records requests. |

New summer EBT gives some Michigan families $120 per child to buy groceries |
More benefits: A new Michigan Summer EBT program will provide eligible families $120 per child to buy groceries while school is out for summer. Funds are expected to be distributed ahead of the program’s Friday, July 19, start date. Families who already have a Bridge Card will get a one-time payment of $120 per eligible child. Also in public interest: Homeowners’ associations across Michigan just lost the right to block energy efficiency elements in their neighborhoods like rooftop solar panels. Gov. Gretchen Whitmer signed legislation on July 8, 2024, that was previously adopted by both the state House and Senate to invalidate any HOA provisions against a litany of energy efficiency home improvements. An estimated 38% of Kalamazoo County households lack enough income to cover basic household expenses, according to the latest ALICE report. That includes 73% of Kalamazoo County’s single mothers and 47% of senior citizen households, the report estimates. |

Hurricane Beryl remnants barreling toward part of Michigan. Here’s what it means for us |
Storm track: The track of the remnant storm of Beryl should make it into part of Michigan with a solid rain. These remnant storms bring some 30 mph gusts and a nasty, windy rain, but not the winds of a tropical storm. The rain should spread in from the south, starting on the southern Michigan border during the second half of Tuesday afternoon or Tuesday evening. Confirmed: A severe thunderstorm produced a tornado in the tip of Michigan’s Thumb last Friday, July 5. The National Weather Service has confirmed an EF-0 tornado—the weakest level of tornado rating—in Huron Township in Huron County. In the skies: According to NASA, a few hours after sunset on the evening of July 13, the moon will pass in front of Spica, a bright star that is white and blue in appearance. This event is called an occultation. For Michigan, the event will begin around 11 p.m., but the exact time will vary depending on your location. |
