Black birth outcomes lag those of white families in Michigan, a fact Black doulas aim to change In Michigan, the maternal mortality rate for Black women is two times higher than for white women as of 2020, according to the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services, and Black infant mortality rates are three times higher than white rates. Black women working as doulas and midwives in their communities may be the future of preventing these adverse health outcomes when it comes to Black maternal care. Alicia Russell, an experienced doula with 1st Heartbeat Doula services, said Black doulas work as an intervention between Black women and the healthcare system. “Doulas realize that doctors don’t take African American females’ pain serious,” Russell said. “They think we have a higher pain tolerance than our counterparts, which is not true.” READ MORE Cats, dogs and other pets fill Michigan animal clinics. But veterinarians are in short supply. Michigan animal hospitals are buckling under the weight of a nationwide shortage of veterinarians. As the profession grapples with high stress, burnout, turnover and crippling student debt—issues exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic—doctors are becoming increasingly difficult to find. “Certainly, we’re feeling the same hurt that’s being felt in other areas of the country. We’re all kind of in the same boat,” said Dr. Erin Howard, president of the Michigan Veterinary Medical Association. Detroit is one of three finalists to host the 2024 draft, Packers president Mark Murphy said during a chat with reporters ahead of the NFL combine. Washington D.C. and Green Bay are the other finalists, making for a unique group vying for hosting rights to the draft. A decision is expected by the end of the owners’ meetings in Florida next month. Liza Estlund Olson, director of the Michigan Office of the State Employer, sent a Monday memo announcing the end of mask requirements for state workers in standard office and outdoor settings starting Thursday.
