Efforts underway to become a greener state |
There has been a lot of environmental news lately, including a national nuclear energy bill that is expected to benefit Michigan. A new type of renewable energy is coming to Beaver Island. Engineering researchers from the University of Michigan will sometime within the next two years test various wave energy technologies in the waters around the island in Lake Michigan. Lastly, Consumers Energy has inked a deal to significantly expand its battery energy storage capacity, a key step on the path toward greater reliance on renewable sources of power. |

Black cowboys carry on overlooked legacy in American rodeo culture |
The boots, denim and wide brimmed cowboy hat are not a costume or aesthetic choice for Trevor Clark, it’s his way of life. The bull rider from Phoenix, Arizona has been around rodeos since he was nine years old and understands the long history of Black cowboys that he's part of. Clark came to Michigan to participate in the Midwest Invitation Rodeo which moved from Detroit to Genesee County for the first time this year. The rodeo is an opportunity to highlight an often-overlooked piece of American culture, the Black cowboys and cowgirls that have been roping cattle since the early days of westward expansion. Watch Clark's ride here. Speaking of sports: Here is a deep dive on Dusty May, from many of the people who know him best. |

Michigan’s first beating-heart transplant offers promise for better outcomes |
A new transplant procedure could be the answer to enhancing access and successful outcomes for patients in need of a new heart. One such patient was Ken Miller, 58, of Ferndale. On May 31, he became the state’s first patient to undergo the procedure, giving him a “new lease on life.” The latest: Michigan’s mandatory 24-hour waiting period for abortions is no more for now after a Tuesday decision by the Michigan Court of Claims. To know: Health care systems and their vendors have increasingly been the target of cyberattacks in recent years. When successful, these schemes can jeopardize patient personal information and cripple a hospital’s operations. Why is this happening more often? |

Lightning strikes were unbelievable in yesterday’s severe weather; We counted all of them |
Tuesday morning between 2 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. had an unbelievable 116,000 lightning strikes and pulses over Lower Michigan. This map shows all of the lightning cloud-to-ground strikes and the cloud-to-cloud strikes. Falling hard: There have definitely been several rounds of heavy rain over Michigan in the past week. The rain amounts do vary quite a bit from a nice amount of rain to more than two months’ worth of rain in a week. Last week, hot temperatures combined with oppressive humidity led to heat indices near 100 degrees for several days. Comparing the amount of 90 degree days various Michigan cities saw to the record books suggests that this wasn’t as irregular of a heat wave as it may have felt like. |

Michigan sheriff calls Capitol riot ‘neglect of duty’ by Trump in new Biden ad |
Genesee County Sheriff Chris Swanson is front and center in a new ad from President Joe Biden’s reelection campaign. In the ad, Swanson -- a powerful name in Flint-area politics -- calls former President Donald Trump’s response to the Jan. 6, 2021 Capitol riot “neglect of duty.” A potential change: Rapid-fire rifle bump stocks could be illegal again in Michigan under a new law being proposed. The Senate bill would ban the manufacturing, sale or possession of bump stocks in the state. An update: A man must serve five years of probation and pay $26,300 in restitution and court costs after being convicted of tampering with the Platte River at the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore two years ago. |
