State to test wells near PFAS-contaminated elementary school
 
PFAS-contaminated drinking water, it seems, can crop up just about anywhere. From rivers to groundwater, from individual homes to entire city water supplies, the concern is real. This week brought us the discovery of elevated PFAS readings in the water supply of an elementary school in Grand Haven. Standard operating procedure has all water fountains turned off and the building switching to bottled water until the issue is resolved. MORE

Superheroes rappel off children's hospital roof to dazzle the kiddos inside
 
It's a bird! It's a plane! It's really cool people doing a really cool thing to entertain the children at Helen DeVos Children's Hospital in Grand Rapids. Coworkers from a window cleaning company donned superhero costumes for a Halloween treat, rappelling down 155 feet to the delight of the kids inside and the onlookers outside. MORE

The 14-year-old freshman who's run into the national spotlight

High school cross country doesn't get much attention outside of the athletes and their parents. (Kudos to you for reading this far!) But it isn't every year we happen upon a nationally ranked freshman phenom. It is our pleasure to introduce you to Abby Vander Kooi. She's 14. She likes ice cream. Her personal best time to complete a 3.1-mile cross country race is 16 minutes, 57.3 seconds. That's good for 10th best in the nation, folks. The state finals are Saturday at Michigan International Speedway. MORE
