When they were young: The joy of prep football players captured in pictures
You don't need to be a sports fan to love these pictures. We've hosted countless high school football teams from across the state in our newsroom hubs the past few weeks. (It's part of our annual effort to gear up for the prep season, meet with players and coaches, and take a few headshots for use during the season.) During these visits, we're occasionally able to capture some pretty unique shots -- some staged, some candid. This collection of photos still has us smiling. Enjoy. Then head on over to our high school sports page for previews and features heading into the 2018 season. MORE

Democrats surge statewide in primary election

"Catch the Wave" used to be the slogan for the city of Muskegon. (Really, this old ad campaign is priceless!) No doubt, Michigan Democrats hope Tuesday's primary results point to the state "catching" a blue wave into the Nov. 8 general election. Participation statewide in the Democratic gubernatorial primary was up 113 percent compared to 2010. On the Republican side, the numbers show a 6 percent drop. Do these numbers portend a greater shift, or were they a matter of circumstance? We'll all find out in three months. MORE

WEATHER

Yeah, it's been hot this summer, and we've got the numbers to prove it

The number of 90-degree days we've had in Michigan this summer is up nearly across the board, in some cases, dramatically so. Grand Rapids and Detroit each average nine days of 90-degree temps per year. Motown's already had 19 days in the 90s, and GR isn't far behind with 17. The long-range outlook for the rest of August shows a great chance to build on those totals. Might as well enjoy the warmth while it lasts, folks. Snow in October is fairly common 'round these parts. MORE

NASCAR returns to MIS this weekend

The popularity of NASCAR has dipped in recent years. However, there's a good reason Michigan International Speedway hosts two race weekends every year. Brooklyn is a great place to spend a race weekend and catch the super-speed action as the pros tackle the 2-mile oval. The weather should be better than June's soggy slog. Michigan's own Brad Keselowski will be back looking for his first MIS checkered flag. And to get you ready, we've got a list off every MIS NASCAR Cup winner.

25 vintage photos of historic Michigan lighthouses

There is something fascinating about lighthouses. Maybe it's rooted in practicality: These beacons help keep us safe. Maybe it's emotional: A connection to humanity while sailing the seas. Maybe it's historical: We tend to glorify what once was. No matter. They are cool, and they dot the Michigan coastline. Not surprisingly, The Great Lakes State has the most lighthouses of any state. MORE
