Within 24 hours, Michigan's reported coronavirus cases jumped by about 500, state officials announced Wednesday. With the increasing number of COVID-19 cases, hospitals are thinking about their ability to handle a surge of patients. Some hospitals in the Detroit area, where the majority of Michigan's coronavirus cases have been reported, are already stating their facilities are at or near capacity. Gov. Gretchen Whitmer earlier this week said that one model projects 70% of Michigan residents could get coronavirus. If that happened, it's estimated that one million of those infected in Michigan would require hospitalization. But where would all those patients go? While many things are closed in Michigan, not everything is closed. In fact, the Soo Locks just opened for the season. The locks system shuts down for a couple months each year so workers can perform routine maintenance. At 12:01 a.m. Wednesday, right on time, the Poe Lock's lower gates opened up and ships were once again allowed to pass through. Here's a look at the first ship of the season to pass through.
