Construction worker's death has left an 'empty hole' in family's heart

Luciano Marban was working Oct. 20 with some colleagues on the lower level of a seven-story reconstruction project in downtown Grand Rapids. A late October wind picked up, and according to official records, these strong gusts dislodged a 16-foot-long, 75-pound piece of wood scaffolding on the roof, sending it tumbling to the ground. It struck Marban on the head and shoulder. He did not survive. The state of Michigan has fined the two companies handling the project. Both deny responsibility and are fighting the nominal fines levied against them. MORE

But that shouldn't faze Shapiro. He frequently speaks at colleges and universities. While many of his appearances come without controversy, others have attracted protests. Today's event most likely will include the latter. MORE

New Haven's Weems named Mr. Basketball
hat
Romeo Weems could have followed the growing trend of top college recruits and finished his high school years at a prestigious prep school. But he stayed at New Haven. On Monday, Weems was named the 2019 Michigan Mr. Basketball, a prestigious award he couldn't get at an out-of-state prep school. It was a big day for awards on the college level, too, as the Big Ten announced its post season accolades. MORE

Muskegon knows how to do fish fries right

Our Michigan's Best crew just finished taking nominations for our best fish fry search. (Look for some regional polls as soon as today!) Amy Sherman and John Gonzalez got a jump start on the search Friday with a trip to Muskegon. They found plenty of delectable fried fish fare, much of which paid homage to a legendary local restaurant. Sadly, that historical eatery is no more. Thankfully, its crispy perch recipe lives on. MORE
