Michigan could lower drunk driving level to .05 under proposed bill

A Michigan lawmaker has proposed a bill that would drop the drunk driving threshold from .08 to .05. Currently, Utah is the only state in the country with a .05 limit. Rep. Abdullah Hammoud, D-Dearborn, said he was partly inspired to write the bill in response to the deaths of a Michigan family in a wrong way crash that involved a driver with a blood alcohol content of .306. Another bill in a package of bills proposed by Hammoud would require those with a first-time drunken driving conviction to install an ignition interlock device on their vehicle. The device requires drivers to take a breathalyzer reading before starting the vehicle. MORE
