Could 19th century sexism negate Michigan's abortion ban?

Too sexist to stand? One of the arguments against Michigan's 1931 abortion ban is that rank sexism was so fundamental to the early anti-abortion legislation that served as the template for the ban that the law violates the Equal Protection Clause of the state’s constitution.

New executive order: Regardless of what happens with the ban, Gov. Gretchen Whitmer signed an executive order Wednesday saying she will refuse to extradite women who come to Michigan seeking abortions, or flee to the state after obtaining one.

Protesters arrested: Six anti-abortion protesters were arrested Wednesday morning after allegedly trying to block access at a Grand Rapids women’s health clinic that performs abortions.

GOP candidates want to stop talking about 2020 fraud claims. They may not have a choice.

"Let’s get off the election issue:"Candidates like Matt DePerno, who is a Republican running for secretary of state in Michigan, want to stop talking about the 2020 election. But it's possible they won't be able to, since a majority of Republicans say they still want to see those results overturned.

According to a May poll: Results show 55% of Republicans said the election should be overturned to reinstate former president Donald Trump. Belief in widespread election fraud is also important for any candidate seeking Trump’s endorsement.

The University of Michigan has a new president. Here are 5 things you should know.

Santa Ono : The 59-year-old Vancouver native hired by the University of Michigan was president of the University of British Columbia, as well as the University of Cincinnati. He is an immunologist by trade and regularly voices his opinions on sports. Here are 5 more things you should know.

'Proud to be a Wolverine:' "The intellectual depth and breadth of the people in this institution is what brought me here,” Ono said during his 12-minute remarks. “I can’t wait to interact with the students and faculty of all campuses of this great institution."

A long history of supporting athletics:Ono praised Michigan’s “storied history” of athletics and its current success while calling it a “point of great pride” for campus and alums.

Here are three stories I enjoyed reading. I thought you might enjoy them too.

A lovely farewell to a Miss America: Pamela Eldred-Robbins, who represented the state of Michigan as the crowned Miss America in 1970, has died at the age of 74. I was moved by the words used by her daughter in the obituary and this write-up on the beauty queen made me feel connected to this human I did not know.

Independent, rural hospitals are disappearing: This story is the kind that made me interested in a topic I had previously put exactly zero thought into. One hospital CEO is vocalizing the benefits of independent hospitals and it makes for a fascinating read.

A home with a Lake Michigan view:Sometimes, you just need to read a story that is easy and fun. That's what we have for our home of the week. This New Buffalo Marina home is on the market for $3.79 million. I'll never be able to afford it, but I sure enjoy looking at the photos.

Participation in high school sports is up 6.6% as a sense of normalcy returns.

A rebound year: Participation numbers for the Michigan High School Athletic Association was up 6.6 percent across 28 sports from last year. The numbers improved despite a decline in enrollment among the 750 member high schools.

COVID's impact: Participation numbers dropped from 274,126 in 2019-20 to 244,012 in 2020-21 as schools grappled with the impact of COVID. It was the lowest total number of participants in a school year dating back to the year 2000.
