James Craig, Perry Johnson and Tudor Dixon turned in enough signatures to get on the primary ballot for Michigan governor this August, but they could be disqualified if new challenges from the Michigan Democratic Party are successful. The MDP filed more than 250 pages worth of complaints to the state on Tuesday. The Democrats allege dead people signed the petitions, some people signed multiple petitions, names were forged, people signed who are not registered to vote and petitions were filled out incorrectly. For six months, extra cash flowed to Americans through the expanded Child Tax Credit program. The monthly checks helped Michigan families fill gaps in their budgets with most using the couple hundred dollars to buy basic needs. More than 3 out of 4 Michigan families used the Child Tax Credit last year to buy food, a survey from the U.S. Census Bureau found. About 41% of parents said they used the tax credit to buy clothing, 29% put some toward housing and 45% used it on utilities. A decade ago today -- on April 27, 2012 -- “The Five Year Engagement” hit movie theaters. The comedy starring Jason Segal and Emily Blunt wove Ann Arbor into its story. Blunt’s character is a University of Michigan doctoral student. Segal’s character, who suffers from frostbite in Pioneer Woods, works as a sandwich maker at Zingerman’s after rejections from Shalimar, Gratzi and Mani Osteria. The film came out at a time when dozens of movies big, small and in between utilized the Ann Arbor area as a backdrop. READ MORE
Laura L. Gomez, a 26-year-old mother of three, and Joseph C. Espinosa, a 30-year-old father of five. Unconnected to one another apart from the fact they were both Saginaw residents, killed within one year, from October 1977 to October 1978. Investigators developed suspects in each killing and authorities issued warrants for them, charging Carmen V.
