In today's newsletter, how Millennials stack up when it comes to buying homes, Republicans are silent on legislative action this fall and two towns in Michigan make the list of great Halloween destinations.

I'm just over here thinking about apples.

I'm not sure why doctors are so scared of apples. I love them! OK, bad joke. My apologies. But, really, this time of year is a treat for apple lovers.

I have some strong opinions about apples, too. For instance, I like my apples raw. I refuse to bake them. I want them crunchy and juicy. I want to eat them straight off the tree (or out of the produce bin).

But I don't want to take a bite of every apple. I have opinions about the varieties, as well. A few years ago I put together this ranking and it seemed like an appropriate time to share it with my Morning Briefing readers.

It's all in good fun. I promise I don't take myself very seriously. And I could be completely wrong about these apple rankings. Well, except for Honeycrisp. I am totally right about those.

This year's flu season in Michigan could be worse than recent years.

A prediction from health officials: The last couple of flu seasons in Michigan have been mild, but officials predict that won't be the case this year. When looking at the recent flu season in other parts of the world, health organizations are bracing for a larger number of cases here in the U.S.

An update on COVID cases:Michigan identified 18,375 new COVID-19 cases and 196 new deaths last week, causing the daily averages for both tallies to rise.

Monkeypox in more counties: A handful of Michigan counties reported their first cases of monkeypox within the last week, as the state’s tally continued its steady rise.

Millennials lack the buying power of Boomers in the housing market.

'I got Millennial money:' In sheer numbers, Millennials are currently dominating the market, but compared to the Silent Generation, Baby Boomers and Generation X, they lag behind in homeownership. Through 2021, an estimated 48.6% of Millennials are homeowners.

'Rapid rent increases:' Climbing housing costs have pushed fair market rents up 10.3% in Michigan. The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development’s updated fair market rents go into effect on Oct. 1. We have the details on the numbers in Michigan.

Housing prices climb as gas prices drop: In our latest look at inflation, while gas prices are down, housing and food prices are on the rise. Core inflation, or the change in prices without food and energy, is still going up.

Michigan Democrats clamor for legislative action as GOP stays mum on priorities.

Taxes, water, abortion: While Dems say they want to take action on these issues, Republicans are silent about an agenda, even when reporters reach out for comment. Not only does the Republican majority set the agenda, they also are responsible for giving the green light to when session occurs in their chambers.

Trump PAC supported initiative: The former president's PAC made its largest donation – a whopping $150,000 – to a ballot initiative: Secure MI Vote. The proposed law would require Michiganders show a photo identification card to vote.

Also in politics:In case you missed it, a group of Republicans has organized to support Democratic Gov. Gretchen Whitmer in her bid for reelection.

Even after two dominant games, Michigan football has ideas for improvement.

An inside view:To an outsider, Michigan has been near perfect. Inside the program, there’s room for improvement. Two things stood out to the Wolverines who met with the media on Monday afternoon: forcing turnovers and limiting pressure.

Halloween towns: Two locations in Michigan were listed among the 18 best U.S. small towns to visit for Halloween. Trip to Discover put together the list, which also includes famous places like Salem, Massachusetts, and Sleepy Hollow, New York.

A job with a great view:Are you tired of the daily grind? Not into the office life anymore? Feel like your life could use some adventure? Well, a recent job listing was posted to search for Mackinac Bridge workers, including some who would perform their duties atop the bridge's 552-foot towers.

Hitting the courts in Ann Arbor: Longtime Ann Arbor News reporter Ryan Stanton was looking to get back into basketball recently. So, he decided to play at all 30-plus courts within the city's parks. As a dedicated reported, his leisure-time activity naturally turned into a written account of the state of the city's basketball amenities.
