Kalamazoo County has spent $182,867 in legal costs in its effort to own a family’s lakeside cottage, according to an estimate from county officials provided to MLive/Kalamazoo Gazette Thursday, May 2. That figure covers legal expenses from November 2019 through February 2024. In the making: New playground equipment, kayak rentals, a swim area and little league playing fields are potential amenities that could be coming to a new Leoni Township park through marijuana tax funds. In politics: President Joe Biden will serve as the keynote speaker this month at the Detroit branch of the NAACP’s 69th Annual Fight for Freedom Fund dinner, organizers announced. |

Michigan weather this week: 2 rains on the way, a warm day, maybe a spotty frost |
Forecast: One storm system will create all of our weather in Michigan this week. The storm system will bring two periods of rain and eventually chilly weather to end the work week. Wednesday and Friday will be the dry days this week. Tuesday and Thursday will be the wet days of the week. Be aware: A line of thunderstorms should move through Michigan today. The latest severe weather forecast actually significantly increased the chance of severe thunderstorms. Part of southern Michigan has been placed in an area of all types of severe weather. Left with only one-third of petals: The Tulip Time Festival informed visitors that downtown Holland, city parks and Windmill Island blooms were sparse after rain, wind, and early warm days preceded the festival. |

Michigan Supreme Court rules against couple in dispute over privacy, drone photos of their land |
Dispute over privacy: The Michigan Supreme Court unanimously ruled in favor of a local government in a dispute over sending a drone to take pictures of a rural salvage yard without permission. Todd and Heather Maxon had argued that the aerial photos violated their right to not have unreasonable searches. But the Supreme Court said the fight over excessive junk on the heavily wooded parcel was a civil action, not a criminal case, and that the so-called exclusionary rule doesn’t apply. Going green: Nexteer Automotive officials announced the company had turned on its new 25-acre, 17,000-panel solar field at its Saginaw County site. The solar panels now provide renewable energy to Nexteer’s operations at 3900 E. Holland Road in Buena Vista Township. In crime: An off-duty detective running the Kalamazoo marathon sprang into action when she saw a man with a gun and a woman fleeing from him. The man was later arrested after a search, police said. |

‘You made me laugh:’ Lions fan who trolled Packers’ draft gets game-worn cleats |
Rewarded: Kerby Joseph has a special way of connecting with his fans on social media, and the Detroit Lions safety did it again while keeping his word for one who went viral during the 2024 NFL draft. When the Green Bay Packers selected Arizona offensive tackle Jordan Morgan near the end of the first round, one Lions fan in Downtown Detroit went viral when the camera cut to him and others surrounding his Packers friend in attendance. And the Lions fans surrounding him felt the sadness and reacted quickly -- pointing and laughing in played-up, comical fashion, much to the delight of everyone watching from home, including Joseph. Snag yourself something: Exclusive memorabilia, private meetings with coaches, and unique game-watching experiences are among the more than 300 auction items listed in advance of the sixth annual ChadTough Defeat DIPG Gala. The gala, which will be held on May 11 at Crisler Center in Ann Arbor, is sold out. The auction, however, is open to the public and features many Michigan Wolverines-specific items. |
