April 6, 2021 There is an interesting combination of hope and concern surrounding the state of the COVID-19 pandemic in Michigan. It seems like things have been heading in two different directions over the past month. On one hand, a surge in COVID-19 means the state currently is reporting its most worrisome metrics of 2021. On the other hand, the pace of vaccinations has stepped up considerably. Health experts and others hope the former is a temporary hump, and the latter will be the road out of the pandemic. Thanks to increased supplies of vaccines, Michigan has averaged 69,543 shots a day since March 1, up 52% over the daily average of 45,831 in February. Researchers who study extremist movements describe “boogaloo bois” as a loose collection of activists who believe a bloody civil war could be on the horizon, with some members being committed to accelerating the collapse of government. Boogaloo members have drawn a chilly reception from organizers of Black Lives Matter demonstrations, who are suspicious of their reasons for attending anti-racist protests.
