 In mid-summer, Michigan was averaging only four deaths a day from the coronavirus. But as cases of the virus began to climb this fall, a surge in deaths soon followed. Michigan is now averaging about 80 deaths per day from the coronavirus, more than the daily average deaths from heart disease, the state’s No. 1 killer. November data shows it was the state’s deadliest month in the pandemic since April. The COVID-19 death toll is likely to be even higher this month, as case numbers soared during November and deaths are a lagging indicator. Paul Mitchell is among a handful of Republicans asking President Donald Trump to stop alleging fraud caused him to lose the 2020 election. Mitchell, who did not run for reelection to a third term this year, represents a staunchly pro-Trump district in Michigan’s thumb region. The retiring congressman made several statements since the Nov. 3 election asking Trump to stop spreading conspiracy theories “for the sake of our nation” and criticized Republican leaders for undermining the election result without evidence. MORE  The latest COVID shutdowns in Michigan are an economic gut punch to many small businesses – although the state is hoping to alleviate some of the damage with grants of up to $15,000. The Michigan Economic Development Corporation plans to distribute $10 million in CARES Act funding from the state to eligible small businesses in need of help, it announced on Monday. There are a handful of requirements a business must meet to be eligible – one of which is, they cannot be in violation of COVID orders from the state or their county health department.  Today is Dec. 1, which marks the beginning of meteorological winter. (No worries if you are confused -- astronomical winter doesn't start until Dec. 21). That means SNOW! Some of you already have it on the ground. There's surely more of it to fall during the coming months. So snow forecasts will be a big part of weather reporting for the foreseeable future. He shares some of the things you should know about those forecasts here: MORE  A number of Michigan farms are making a big donation to military families in the form of Christmas Trees. It's estimated nearly 1,000 trees from Michigan will be a part of this year's Trees for Troops haul. The nonprofit delivers donated Christmas trees to those serving in the military each holiday season since 2005. This year, the goal is to donate 14,500 trees to 79 military bases across the United States, which will surpass a total of 250,000 Christmas trees donated to service members since the program started 15 years ago.
