June 17, 2021 After almost 15 months of masking and pandemic-related restrictions, the Memorial Day holiday was a coming-out weekend of sorts for many Michiganders, a chance to socialize with friends and family and begin a return to pre-pandemic life. But maybe the biggest and best news is what didn’t happen. Two weeks after the holiday weekend, it appears a big surge in travel and social gatherings did not result in a big surge in COVID-19 cases -- or any bump in case numbers. “We had our stress test on Memorial Day, and we seemed to have passed it,” said Dr. Frank Rosenblat, an Oakland County infectious disease specialist with McLaren Health. As introduced, the bills would prevent counties, cities and other local governments from passing ordinances preventing or limiting law enforcement from contacting federal immigration authorities. “All we’re trying to do is allow law enforcement to do their job. These law enforcement entities have a job to do and sometimes there are violent criminals, that may be here from Russia, or some other country," said Rep. Beau LaFave, one of the sponsors. Richard Goldman, who was identified as “John Doe, E.B. 17” in litigation filed last summer against the school, spoke publicly for the first time on Wednesday. “I went into Don Canham’s office, said ‘Something’s wrong,’ and he sat there and stood at me (and) said nothing,” Goldman said. As the longest-reigning Miss Michigan in history, Rivard wore the crown for an extra year after the scholarship pageant competition was canceled in 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic. “That was just a different challenge in my mind.
