Lumber Baron's descendant: 'Curse of Civil War Gold' theory is 'ludicrous'
 
Charles H. Hackley's great grandson says he knows exactly where the Muskegon lumber baron and philanthropist made his money. The millionaire, according to descendant Charles "Chuck" Hackley III, got that money from lumber and from banking -- that's it. That's not as exciting as the explanation recently given in a History Channel show "Curse of Civil War Gold," which claimed Hackley banded together with other Michiganders to steal Confederate gold. That's simply "ludicrous," the younger Hackley said. MORE

More than 100 Michigan school districts have unsettled union contracts
 
Some Michigan districts have already started the school year. That doesn't mean, though, that union contracts for school employees throughout Michigan have been finalized for 2019-2020. In fact, 110 districts in the state have contracts left in limbo, according to the Michigan Education Association. For teachers in those districts, that could mean less money coming home in their paychecks. MORE

When U.S. Marine Corps Reserve veteran Justin Rowland was diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder, it made sense. He had been dealing with anxiety and depression after serving in the military for nearly a decade and then working as a police officer. White Cloud not alone as others grapple with fate of football season

It was big news this week when  White Cloud announced the high school would not have a varsity football season this year. But the Newaygo County town is not alone. Three other schools have made the same decision for this season. Each year, according to the Michigan High School Athletic Association, about a handful of districts make that same call. But it certainly is rare, considering more than 600 Michigan high schools have a varsity football team.  MORE
