Decision on reopening of gyms, bowling alleys, theaters coming 'very soon,' Whitmer says Business owners and patrons have been waiting for news about when Michigan's remaining shuttered businesses -- like gyms and theaters -- can reopen. Later this month would mark half a year since these businesses shut their doors after the coronavirus first arrived in Michigan. While restaurants, retail stores and other businesses have been able to open back up with COVID restrictions in place, a handful of industries were deemed too risky to open while the pandemic is still in full swing. So, have we reached the point where we can return to indoor workouts and bowling alleys? It looks like we will find out soon. The announcement is expected to come later this week – possibly Friday – per the Associated Press. But since the first week of June, there’s been more than 4,000 new businesses starting each week, on average. Yes, the pandemic appears to have sparked an entrepreneur spirit in many Michiganders.
