How does Michigan's Legislature and the state's Congressional delegation look now?

Dems in control for first time in 4 decades: For the first time in four decades, Democrats will take control of the Michigan House and Senate. The last time that happened was in the early 80s. Gov. Whitmer will serve her second term alongside two chambers reflecting her party affiliation.

A look at Congress: With one less congressional seat and three newcomers added to Michigan’s Congressional roster, the makeup of Michigan’s U.S. House offices saw a notable shift in the 2022 midterms. Get a full rundown here.

Turnout was record-breaking: Michigan’s 2022 midterm election saw the highest voter turnout in the state’s history, beating the record previously set in 2018.

John James wins his congressional race while Dan Kildee returns for a sixth term.

John James wins : Some races took a bit longer to be called. It wasn't until late yesterday afternoon that the Associated Press announced John James had officially secured a spot in Congress. It was his third attempt at public office.

Dan Kildee secures new seat: U.S. Rep. Dan Kildee is returning to Congress for a sixth term, defeating Republican challenger Paul Junge in the general election. The two were in a fight for the newly redrawn 8th congressional district.

Three university boards: Six Democrats won elections to sit on the boards of Michigan’s three largest public universities.

I've rounded up some interesting headlines you might have missed out of Tuesday's election.

Marijuana proposals: As five states voted on whether to legalize recreational marijuana Tuesday, 32 communities across Michigan had local elections to decide on issues surrounding our state's legal marijuana market. The results were divided.

Library funding gets voted down again: The embattled Patmos Library, a target of residents opposed to LGBTQ materials being offered, lost most of its potential funding after Jamestown Township voters rejected a millage proposal.

Citizens decide not to dissolve village:A piece of land less than a mile in area will remain designated as the village of Breedsville, after voters struck down an attempt to dissolve the municipality in Southwest Michigan.

Perhaps the Spartans deserve some optimism, eh?

After all, they won one: Our Spartan Confidential crew discusses how bowl hopes are still alive in East Lansing after Michigan State got a win over Illinois Saturday. Plus, the guys talk about a promising Spartan start on the basketball court.

Defense improving despite absences: Injuries and suspensions are leaving the Spartans seemingly shorthanded. But despite that, Michigan State turned in a solid defensive performance in last week’s 23-15 win.

A Wolverine football update: Michigan QB Cade McNamara took to social media platform Instagram on Wednesday morning with a photo story from a hospital bed, with a caption reading, “Here we go!”

Quick tip: Put a 6-inch to one-foot layer of leaves on your garden and then keep mowing over them. The chopped up leaves will have a six-month head start on decomposing compared to whole leaves. See? I told you yesterday that you don't have to bag all those leaves!
