In today's newsletter, Detroit air quality ranks among world’s worst as wildfire smoke blankets Michigan, these two Michigan universities are among the best 150 in the world, and Tom Brady reacts to death of Ryan Mallett. 

The wait is over for cherry pie beer.

Craft beer lovers, mark your calendars. Right Brain Brewery in Traverse City is bringing back its Cherry Pie Whole, a beer that tastes like a fruity slice of dessert.

A special release party to coincide with this summer’s Cherry Festival is being planned by the brewery for Friday, June 30. Festivities will kick off at 11 a.m. and run until 10 p.m. 

“Brewed with whole cherry crumb pie from Grand Traverse Pie company, ‘Cherry Pie Whole’ has been one of our most sought-after seasonal beers for over 10 years now,” Right Brain staff said. “Expect light notes of crust, topped with a cherry finish!”

Detroit air quality ranks among world’s worst as wildfire smoke blankets Michigan

Smoky skies: The National Weather Service has issued Air Quality alerts for all of Michigan, due to small particles in the air as a result of ongoing Canadian wildfires. The Motor City continues to be one of the hardest-hit cities, as Detroit had the worst air quality in the world Tuesday night, according to IQAir’s major city air quality ranking.

The haze drags on: We might have to grow accustomed to hazy skies.  The upper-air flow and computer forecasts say we are going to continue to have patches of smoke blow through our sky.

Protect the pets: Health officials recommend limiting the time your pets spend outdoors as wildfire smoke from Canada has caused unhealthy air quality throughout much of Michigan.

Michigan’s $82 billion budget brings record spending to all corners of state government

Making history: Democrats passed a record $81.7 billion budget late Wednesday night. It’s a budget hallmarked by record spending on traditional Democratic priorities, including education, environmental protection and social services alongside additional spending on public safety, infrastructure and economic development.

Banning conversion therapy: Once signed by Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, Michigan will join 21 states, plus the District of Columbia, that have already outlawed conversion therapy for LGBTQ minors. The practice is said to result in increased risk of suicide and self-loathing.

More in public interest: Nearly 3.4 million of Michiganders will have to soon take steps to renew their Medicaid and Healthy Michigan plans for the first time since before the COVID-19 pandemic.

These 2 Michigan universities are among the best 150 in the world, rankings say

Top of the class: The University of Michigan is once again one of the best American public universities on the globe, according to the updated QS World University Rankings released on June 27. The Ann Arbor university ranked No. 33 out of all global universities while Michigan State University was listed at No. 136. 

Raising the price: Western Michigan University is considering a tuition hike for the 2023-2034 school year. The university's Board of Trustees will also consider increases to room and board prices during a public meeting  Thursday, June 29 in WMU’s Bernhard Center.

New opportunities: Grand Rapids Community College is launching a new Data Science Certificate program intended to help students learn how to interpret data and communicate their findings effectively.

‘We lost a great man:’ Tom Brady reacts to death of Ryan Mallett

In remembrance: Tom Brady took to social media to send his condolences to the family of Ryan Mallett. Mallett, who backed up Brady for three seasons with the Patriots, died Tuesday at the age of 35. “We lost a great man. Thank you for everything Ryan,” Brady wrote in an Instagram story.

Come visit a historic 175-year-old Michigan lighthouse in Port Hope this summer

Check it out: For Great Lakes history buffs and those planning fun summer activities with the family, a historic lighthouse in Port Hope is a destination to add to the list. The Pointe aux Barques Lighthouse ranks among the ten oldest lighthouses in Michigan, according to its website.
