Detroit riverfront transformation continues with urban beach groundbreaking
The city of Detroit has been looking for years at ways to increase public access to the Detroit River. A project to do just that broke ground Monday, spearheaded by the Detroit Riverfront Conservancy. After more than a year of planning and fundraising, construction of Atwater Beach has begun. The urban beach project will include a sandy beach, an interactive play area and dining and shopping options. When it opens (possibly next year), bring your swimwear if you're looking for a tan, but leave your swim fins at home. Urban beaches are not for swimming! Detroiters looking to take a dip in the river still will need to go to Belle IsleMORE

PFAS advisory is lifted in Parchment as Flint water switch remains muddy

We have a pair of updates regarding ongoing water concerns. First the good news. The Parchment drinking water advisory was lifted Monday, a month after PFAS were detected in the municipal water supply at levels 20 times greater than a state and federal health standard. Now for the bad news. State officials apparently knew the Flint River was experiencing rising levels of PFAS, but may not have informed the city of Flint of the concern before its water source was switched to the river. (A decision which ultimately led to the Flint water crisis.) MORE

Michigan's 50 highest-spending school districts per pupil

School is back in session for many Michigan school districts, and we've got the back-to-school data you're looking for. In yesterday's newsletter, we delved into per-pupil spending, revenues for every Michigan school district. Today, we break out the school districts that spend the most per pupil. It makes sense that smaller schools comprise the lion's share of this top 50 list. For example, tiny Wells Township School District in Marquette County has only six students and an operating budget of $386,963. That comes out to spending $64,494 per student. (Isn't math fun?) MORE

The prediction business is rough. Asking reporters to put their butts on the line before a season begins really isn't fair. But, gosh, it sure can be fun to pick apart preseason prognostications! So, here we have MLive Michigan beat writer Aaron McMann stepping to the line with some first-rate fodder for fans as they while the days away until Saturday night's season opener at Notre Dame. (Note: Rail against these predictions if you must. Just remember to offer McMann kudos if he proves prescient!) MORE

Take a Great Lakes cruise from Detroit

Planning a trip to Montreal next summer? Might we suggest a luxurious Great Lakes cruise ship out of Detroit? While cruise ships have made port in Detroit in recent years, the Motor City hasn't been the terminus of a route in, possibly, decades. MLive cruise line beat writer Ed Pevos climbed aboard Victory II for a peak at all the magnificent vessel has to offer. MORE
