We looked into diversity and discrimination in Ann Arbor's city government. Here's what we found. |
White men dominate in hiring and promotions: Ann Arbor officials say they are committed to diversity. But white men still dominate the city government, according to an MLive investigation. You can take a closer look at city hall employee demographics, with racial and gender diversity stats broken down by department. A plan to recruit diverse police and fire personnel: The city is trying to attract more minority job applicants and shift the demographics of the city’s workforce. A recruitment program for new firefighters is aimed at changing the make-up of the department, which is currently 90% male and 90% white. Workplace discrimination complaints: From allegations of racism in the police force to gender discrimination in other city departments, Ann Arbor has faced a laundry list of workplace complaints at city hall. We filed Freedom of Information Act requests to obtain records about the complaints. Learn what we found here. |

Animals news from across Michigan includes a favorite bird and the sad story of a missing wallaby. |
Piping plovers are back: Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore’s first Great Lakes piping plover nests of 2022 have been spotted, kicking off what’s hoped to be another great summer for the endangered bird. Missing wallaby likely snatched from above: The Detroit Zoo has been investigating the disappearance of a wallaby joey after staff noticed the baby animal went missing over the weekend. Zoo officials say their best guess is that the wallaby was snatched by a predator.
Bird shows banned: Michigan is stopping all poultry and waterfowl exhibitions as a deadly avian flu threatens domestic flocks. The ban is effective immediately. You can read more here.
