Does Michigan actually have a teacher shortage? |
It ranges: It’s a complicated subject, made even more complicated with no active data on vacancies. What we do know is less people are becoming teachers, 63% of teachers are aged 40+, and Michigan has one of the lowest salary average for teachers in the country. Some districts are struggling, some are doing okay. See data on your school district here. Struggling schools offer incentives: Even though a school may be fully staffed, it might have taken some drastic changes to fill that gap such as bringing back retired teachers. At Jackson Public Schools, they offered a $10,000 sign-on bonus to prospective hires.

Whitmer executive order waives some fuel rules after Indiana refinery fire |
Response to fire: Gov. Gretchen Whitmer issued an executive order to lift some fuel rules after a fire shut down an Indiana refinery earlier this week. The energy emergency declaration will temporarily waive regulations for vehicles transporting gas and diesel. The details: Under the order, drivers transporting gas and diesel are exempt from maximum weekly driving and on-duty rules to ensure “these limits will not hinder the delivery of gas and diesel to stations in Michigan,” a news release said.
Update on Sanford Dam: Progress is being made after a spring rainstorm wreaked havoc back in 2020 and caused the catastrophic failure of dams in Midland County. Efforts to restore the failed Sanford Dam reached a new milestone as the water from the Tittabawassee River started to flow again. |
