PFAS found in drinking water for 1.5 million Michigan residents
Toxic chemicals known as PFAS have been detected in the drinking water of 1.5 million Michigan residents. And that is just what we know so far. Testing data disclosed by the Department of Environmental Quality has revealed PFAS levels in municipal water systems for cities like Saginaw, Grand Rapids, Kalamazoo and Ann Arbor. While many systems that tested positive are below the safety level set by the federal government, some say that level is too high and doesn't protect residents. One water system in the southwest Michigan city of Parchment tested with PFAS levels so high, residents were told to immediately stop using their water. In total, 28 systems across the state have tested positive for what are referred to as the "forever chemicals." That is with tests completed for nearly half of the state's public water systems and schools that operate their own wells. MORE

Former MSU gymnastics coach charged with lying to police in Nassar case

Kathie Klages, the former women's gymnastics coach for Michigan State University, faces two criminal charges related to the Larry Nassar scandal. Klages, who coached the team for 27 years before resigning amid the sexual abuse scandal, faces a felony and a misdemeanor charge of lying to police. Investigator Bill Forsyth said Klages denied being told about Nassar's conduct prior to 2016 but victims of Nassar previously stated they made Klages aware of sexual abuse as early as 1997. MORE

If you are in the mood to dance in the moonlight, this weekend is the time to do just that. August's full moon is sometimes referred to as the Blackberry Moon or the Corn Moon, but many refer to it as the Sturgeon Moon because the fish is a perfect catch this time of year. No matter what you call it, this lovely full moon will provide beautiful moonrises on Saturday and Sunday, if the clouds cooperate. It becomes officially full just before 8 a.m. on Sunday, so get your dancing shoes ready. MORE

Put minimum wage initiative on November ballot, appeals court says

In a 2-1 decision, the Michigan Court of Appeals has ruled that a proposal to increase the state's minimum wage should appear on the November ballot. The proposal, put forward by Michigan One Fair Wage, would raise the state's minimum wage to $10 next year and to $12 by 2022. Tipped workers, who current make $3.52 before tips, would make the full minimum wage by 2024. While the court's ruling is a win for One Fair Wage, their fight might not be over. Michigan Opportunity, a group opposing the proposal, might take the case to the Supreme Court. MORE

If there is only one thing about Ohio that can put a smile on a Michigander's face, it is Cedar Point. The amusement park is a favorite destination of our state's residents. While we would still make the trip to this fun destination even if nothing ever changed, a new attraction at Cedar Point is always a source of excitement. The park recently announced they will unveil a new attraction next year. The only downside? If you love Dinosaurs Alive, you will be sad to hear it is a casualty of the change. MORE
