WMU professor, a WWII vet, reflects on his life's work: A theory on peace
 
Rudolf Siebert fought in World War II. He was drafted. He rose to the rank of lieutenant. He led troops during Gen. Patton's march toward Berlin. However, Siebert fought on the losing side. He was 6 years old when Adolf Hitler came into power. He was 15 when he was forced into the German Air Force. He was 17 in 1944 when he was taken as a prisoner of war by American forces. Those experiences paved the way for his lifelong pursuit and study of peace and religion. Siebert, 92, retired in August after 54 years as a professor at Western Michigan University. MORE

Deadly mosquito-borne virus spreads to Eaton County

The number of reported cases of Eastern equine encephalitis in the state has dropped off. However, the deadly mosquito-borne virus still is spreading. The first case of the disease in Eaton County was confirmed recently in a deer. EEE now has killed five people and at least 45 animals in 17 Michigan counties. MORE
