August 5, 2020 Voters across Michigan cast ballots yesterday in the state's primary election. Clerks saw a significant uptick in the number of absentee ballots submitted amid the coronavirus pandemic. That change means it takes longer for officials to tally votes, Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson explained Tuesday night. Benson said she expects unofficial results will be ready by mid-day today. Gretchen Whitmer is asking state agencies to review their resources and make mask enforcement, along with other coronavirus safety mandates, a priority. Enforcement of the mask mandate would entail potentially stripping businesses of their licenses, if they aren't requiring employees and customers to properly wear masks. The directive, issued by Whitmer Tuesday, also states the Michigan State Police must enforce the mask mandate and capacity limits "in the same manner as it would enforce any other violation of law."
