In today's newsletter, every Michigan Republican in Congress endorses Trump for 2024, Tigers draft nine high school players and a U.P. nature preserve with 300-year-old pines reopens with improved trails.

Welcoming the Alliance to Michigan

The Alliance, a triple-masted schooner that is making its way from the East Coast to the Great Lakes, is set to receive a big welcome when it sails into its new home port on Grand Traverse Bay this week.

The 105-foot boat that’s most recently done day cruises in Virginia, is the newest name in the Inland Seas Education Association’s fleet. It's expected to finish its 3,000-mile journey late this week.

The public is welcome to tour the Alliance and meet the crew on Friday, July 14 from 4 to 7 p.m. at Suttons Bay.

Every Michigan Republican in Congress endorses Trump for 2024

He's their pick: Michigan’s six GOP congressmembers formally endorsed ex-president Donald Trump for president in 2024 on Tuesday, according to an announcement from the Trump campaign. All six have been previously endorsed by Trump in congressional races.

More protection: Gov. Gretchen Whitmer on Tuesday signed the second of three major bill packages put forth this year that tackle sex abuse in Michigan after the Larry Nassar and Robert Anderson scandals.

Last month, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled 6-3 that free speech protections in the Constitution allow a Colorado web designer to refuse service to gay and lesbian couples. The decision also trumps Michigan’s recently expanded Elliott-Larsen Civil Rights Act that protects LGBTQ people from discrimination.

Campus carry: It’s currently illegal to carry a concealed pistol on the premises of schools, day cares and sporting arenas, but Rep. Gina Johnsen, R-Lake Odessa, is looking to make an exemption to that ban should these places reside in a specific place: college or university campuses.

Reducing gun violence: Parents in Kalamazoo who find a gun in their child’s possession can have police remove it without making them face criminal charges.

More in public interest: Michigan State University is being accused of improperly redacting information about farmland possibly being sold for an industrial mega site in Eagle Township west of Lansing.

Storms could linger, deliver excessive rainfall to one Michigan area Wednesday

More rain is on the way: Showers and thunderstorms are expected today, primarily for areas near the Michigan/Indiana/Ohio border. This is expected to weaken, if not eliminate, the drought that’s been ongoing since early May. This rain, however, might be too much of a good thing for one area, as flooding concerns have already materialized.

Lights out: Internet stories circulated this past weekend of a coming solar storm and northern lights on Thursday. The Space Weather Prediction Center doesn’t believe that is going to be the case now.

Shimmering skies: The moon could put on a celestial show this week as it may be seen glowing with a dim light called “earthshine” while near a special cluster of stars.

MLB Draft 2023: Tigers draft 9 high school players

One theme was clear as the Detroit Tigers wrapped up the third and final day of the 2023 MLB Draft: They’re drafting ‘em young. Nine of the Tigers’ 21 picks this week—including their top pick in Round 1 and their last selection in Round 20—were high school players.

Four more years: A league source has confirmed to MLive that the Pistons and forward Isaiah Stewart have reached an agreement on a four-year, $64 million extension. The Athletic reports that the fourth year on Stewart’s deal is a team option.

Keep pedaling: Former Michigan Wolverine Michael Woods pulled off a major upset by completing Stage 9 during one of the most mountainous stages of the 2023 Tour de France.

U.P. nature preserve with 300-year-old pines reopens with improved trails

Nature lovers: Estivant Pines Nature Sanctuary, a beloved Upper Peninsula preserve known for its rare stand of old-growth pine trees, has reopened to the public after trail improvement projects had caused a brief closure.

Adventure seekers: Cedar Point is giving theme park enthusiasts a reason to celebrate with its “Christmas in July” sale on admission tickets. The discounted tickets are available through Thursday, July 13.

Summer fun: The second and final Free ORV Weekend of 2023 is scheduled for August 19-20, giving riders the chance to cap off their summer with one last adventure for free.
