September 16, 2020 More than a lifetime passed as the Pere Marquette 18 sat at the bottom of Lake Michigan without a soul knowing exactly where she had come to rest. This summer, the wreck of the ferry was discovered by Great Lakes shipwreck hunters from Minnesota. The discovery took a whopping 110 years. “We consider it arguably the most desirable wreck, with the most gravitas, in Lake Michigan — unless someone believes The Griffin is in Lake Michigan,” said Jerry Eliason, who, along with fellow wreck hunter Ken Merryman, found the ship. Many a-shipwreck hunter has dreamed of finding the ferry, mainly because of the mystery surrounding the ship's final voyage. The main remaining question is why the ship began taking on water that fateful night in 1910. On Tuesday, the day after one such rally featuring Trump's son and Michigan's own Kid Rock, Gov. Gretchen Whitmer said Trump is “luring people" to come out during a global pandemic. Whitmer, a Democrat and a national co-chair of Joe Biden’s presidential campaign, said the rallies violate executive orders she put into place to limit the spread of COVID. “This is the exact kind of thing that creates potential superspreader events,” she said. While no one can guarantee the reason for the decline in referees, the coronavirus and the later-reversed postponement of the season likely played a role. So what does fewer football officials mean for the 2020 season, which starts this weekend? It could mean some teams play on Saturday afternoon instead of Friday night. For others, it could mean smaller referee teams officiating games. Schools are working to make those decisions. A lot of those employees, who are able to work remotely, are still utilizing home offices (or dining room tables) instead of sitting in an office space. Some are questioning when they will be able to return to the office as the coronavirus pandemic continues. For many of Michigan's large employers, that answer doesn't include the year 2020.
