Flooding victim

Midland flood victims who 'literally lost their life's savings' face new reality

As Midland residents hit by last week's devastating flooding evaluate the damage, some of them have come to a heartbreaking realization -- they'll never be able to afford to live in their homes again. That means a number of homeowners are simply walking away, leaving behind the structures they've called "home" for years or even decades. Some of these residents have weathered previous floods, even the big one in 1986, and were able to repair the damages. This flood was just too extreme, causing too much destruction. "I don't have a place to live," said 72-year-old Carol Kaweck. "I lost everything." MORE

The only home Landon Jennings had ever known was destroyed this winter by a catastrophic fire. The 18-year-old Standish-Sterling senior found himself sifting through the ashes, searching for his Golden Helmet football award. His last year of high school became memorable for all the wrong reasons, between the fire and the coronavirus that scrapped the end of the school year. But the young athlete credits the many sports he plays as the reason he made it through the hard times.  MORE
