When you’re a town of just 1,300 people, tucked up against Thumb country on the sunrise side of Michigan, you don’t expect anyone to know where you are. Something really crazy has to happen to put you on the map. And yet here we are and little Pinconning is known for not one, but two things: cheese and the holy grail of marijuana in Michigan. Most people know about the cheese. But it’s the wild folklore surrounding the mythical marijuana strain Pinconning Paralyzer whose tale we’d like to tell. Michigan Crime Stories - MLive’s most popular podcast - is back with a new season and Pinconning is at the center of it all. Listen as MLive reporter Gus Burns takes you through the riveting history and potential resurrection of this storied cannabis strain. CHECK IT OUT Michigan AG to argue before state Supreme Court that sexual orientation is protected Michigan’s primary civil rights law, the Elliott-Larsen Civil Rights Act, outlaws discrimination based on religion, race, color, national origin, age, sex, height, weight, familial status and marital status, but not sexual orientation. Legislation and petition initiatives that sought to change that have come up short, but Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel is looking to expand those protections through the courts. READ MORE Dr. Darryl Elmouchi had two points to make when he wrote his system-wide email earlier this month. The president of Spectrum Health West Michigan wanted to highlight the significant strain on hospitals during Michigan’s extended fourth wave of COVID-19 cases, and to ask for patience in the face of unrelenting challenges. “It is very clear, whether in command center meetings or rounding in our urgent cares, emergency departments and hospitals, that we are truly in unchartered territory,” Elmouchi wrote on Oct. 12. As the letter went out to hospital employees, Spectrum had reached 239 COVID-19 patients, which was a high point for the current surge. There is no six-win goal, no six-win milestone, no six-win celebration. Instead, for a select few, the Michigan High School Athletic Association’s first-year playoff point system has brought six-win heartbreak. “I’m not a fan of what went on,” Oscoda coach Mark Whitley said. “We got six wins, had a good year – and I just collected the equipment and sent the kids home in tears.” Oscoda is one of five 11-player football teams in Michigan that did not qualify for the playoffs despite winning six games. That hasn’t happened to a team since 1998. It points toward two strong possibilities we may have experienced when winter is all said and done. The main factor for this winter’s forecast is a condition called La Niña. You may remember we had a La Niña last winter. With this winter also expected to have a La Niña, this is what we call back-to-back La Niñas. While a winter forecast based on La Niña could be inaccurate (remember last winter?), the La Niña does give long-range forecasters some much increased forecasting skill over just a guess. Two aspects of that increased skill play into Michigan’s winter forecast." READ MORE ►National Weather Service seeking obsessive 'homebody' to constantly measure snowfall in the U.P.
