Michigan Central Station finds a homegrown owner as Ford steps in
One of the most recognizable and referenced examples of blight in Detroit is off the market. The Moroun family has sold the historic Michigan Central Station to Ford Motor Company. Details of the sale and plans for the rehabilitation of the once stately train station have yet to be announced. However, the sale signifies salvation for the historic building, which was slated for demolition less than 10 years ago. The Morouns have owned the property since the early 1990s. Ford said it will announce plans for the station, and its nearby Corktown development, next week. MORE

Researchers turn to sex pheromones in Grand River lamprey study

It is the rare organism that can claim to be more gross than a bloodsucking sea lamprey. We are sure they are out there. We just can't think of any at the moment while staring at the picture of that hideous parasite straight out of a sci-fi movie. Gives us the willies. This invasive species is all the more reason to be glad you aren't a fish. Researchers recently concluded the first population study of lamprey in the Grand River in more than 40 years. Results are expected later this month. MORE

Charles Pickett Jr. gets 40 years for Kalamazoo bicycle crash

Charles Pickett Jr. never cut the profile of a sympathetic defendant. His tearful apology Monday in court during sentencing for his role in the deaths of five bicyclists and serious injury to four others fell short in the court of public opinion. The judge wasn't moved either, handing the convicted murderer behind the Kalamazoo bicycle crash a minimum 40 year prison sentence. Pickett won't be eligible for parole until he is 90. MORE

Pistons name 2018 NBA Coach of the Year new head coach

The Detroit Pistons have a new head coach in Dwane Casey. The 2018 NBA Coach of the Year, who was fired after seven seasons in Toronto, will be tasked with one seemingly simple task - yet one that clearly is difficult for this franchise: Make the playoffs. Stan Van Gundy only managed to do that one time during his tenure in Detroit, and he was swept in the first round by LeBron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers. Interestingly, Casey lost his job with the Raptors because he never advanced past King James in the playoffs, including being swept in this season's Eastern Conference semifinals as the No. 1 seed. MORE
